Dedication:
"Creation of a lasting example of superlative excellence which appeals to the initiated and the uninitiated alike is every artists' dream. This production is dedicated to those Unknown Artists who through their devotion to art, astounding vision, skill and exquisite commitment to propagate the art through generations over centuries, achieved this dream, stretching the boundaries of excellence in more ways than one."
The inspiration:
"Ajanta & Ellora left me spellbound by the art which is exquisite, if not for anything else, for the sheer audacity of mankind in creating something so prolific, varied yet harmonous. That however was not the only thing which touched me at Ajanta & Ellora. I experienced selfless creativity, artists being fully aware that the result may not come in one's lifetime, I experienced great tradition which inspite of several centirues of continuous activity leaves no jarring effect but only evolution and lastly, the great collaboration putforth by the Governments of India and Japan giving a rightful tribute to the Unknown Artists in maintaining the peace, sanctity and greenery of this World Hertitage Site, of which we all must be proud of. This wholesome experience is possible not through coffee table books or even a mere production like mine. My production is an humble effort to encourage people to experience this marvel of human creativity, patience, selflessness, responsibility and modern day international co-operation."
The Creativity:
"I feel that creative composition must have a well thought out purpose. 'Why am I doing this?' and 'Am I doing justice to my medium while doing so?' must be answered honestly by the artist before presentation. Both these questions are relevent as many excellent creative ideas end up mediocre from the art's standpoint. The artistry lies in reaching the creative thinking to the audience who may or may not know the medium of expression - in my case being Kathak. At the same time, the tradition of the medium must be maintained as that is not a constraint but an unending canvass for creativity for an able artist, as is evident in cration of great maestros and by creations such as Ajanta & Ellora ".
My privilege:
"When I was working on evolving the concept, I realized that the concept requires seemingly different arts to bring the sense of harmony in diversity which Ajanta & Ellora epitomise. Also, I realized that these concept requires artists of exceptional calibre for an honest, effective and befitting tribute to the Unknown Artists. I am privileged that Sujata Mohapatra, who is the foremost exponent of Odissi dance form of the country and disciple of legendary Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra readily agreed to collaborate with me in presenting this concept. Though we started with the concept of harmony in diversity, we realized it during the course of our collaboration - the two medium of expressions; Kathak & Odissi (it stand for any Indian classical dance) have strong common building blocks - Abhinaya (Expression), Laya (Rhythm) and Swar (Lyrical sound)."
The
essence of my effort:
"I have tried to remain truthfully loyal to my medium of Kathak which has stout torso at its heart and footwork as its uniqueness. Sujata in her excellent interpretation has maintained the hallmark of Odissi - balance & the flexibility of the body. Together, we have tried to enliven the spirit of Ajanta & Ellora - Uncompromised creativity giving full freedom of expression to our media. The wider our effort reaches the audiences across the world, more will be the satisfaction of achieving the purpose behind it - Generating the awareness for the Unknown Artists, the timeless wizards."
